Inspiration is unreliable. Habits are not. Most working writers will tell you that the desk — whatever and wherever it is — matters less as furniture than as a promise to show up.

Make the start easy

End each session mid-sentence or with a note about what comes next. Tomorrow’s first five minutes are the hardest; give them a head start.

Protect a small window

Thirty uninterrupted minutes beat three distracted hours. Close the browser, silence the phone and let the page be the only thing asking for your attention.

The desk is not where the book is written. It is where you keep your appointment with it.

Finally, read like a writer. Keep a notebook for sentences you admire and ask what makes them work. Your desk is also a place to study.
